WGBH: Undocumented Immigrants Face Coronavirus, Job Loss With No Safety Net

Some undocumented people decide to go public with their status in order to help their fellow immigrants. Nelson Hernandez from Framingham, Mass., is active in a group called La Voz de la Comunidad - Framingham. He said he lost his job in construction when his boss sent everyone home because of the virus. He now worries about feeding his wife and two kids.

Decades of de-prioritization of their needs by both local and federal legislators have led us to this point. Now we are creating both national and local mutual aid networks to bridge those gaps as best we can. We encourage workers to apply to this Emergency Fund for immediate cash assistance, and we encourage those who are able to donate to help those most affected by this global health pandemic and the resulting crisis to our economy.”
