MassUndocuFund Reaches Halfway Mark to $1 MILLION for Covid-19 Relief

BOSTON: The Massachusetts UndocuFund for COVID-19 Relief has raised $500,000 of its $1 Million initial funding goal. The Fund was created to address the needs of those Massachusetts workers and their families who are overlooked by federal relief efforts. A total of 322 people benefited since the distribution of funds began on April 14th. Over half of that number are parents with children in our Commonwealth.

Several immigrant aid groups awarded money in Boston Foundation's first round of coronavirus-related grants

The Boston Foundation today announced 15 $25,000 grants to Boston groups dealing with fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, including a number of immigrant support groups, such as:

“Massachusetts Jobs with Justice: to provide financial assistance to undocumented individuals and families who have lost their homes, wages, and/or employment due to COVID-19;”

CommonwealthMagazine: Undocumented workers fall through the cracks

The Mass UndocuFund, backed by Jobs with Justice, MataHari Women’s Worker Centers, the Restaurant Opportunities Center, and One Fair Wage, is trying to raise at least $1 million for undocumented families. The effort launched March 23, and has $22,000 in its coffers so far, or enough to provide help to 70 recently unemployed workers and families. Funds are meant to help with expenses, including rent, groceries, medicine, transportation, and even funerals.

“Those immigrants include Vanderleia da Silva, a 53-year-old house cleaner and undocumented immigrant from Brazil who has lost all 20 of her clients. She has no income, no safety net, and no way of knowing what the future holds for her household of four in Medford.”

That leaves undocumented workers fending for themselves and relying on nonprofit efforts, such as the MassUndocFund and Restaurant Strong Fund. Since last week, Restaurant Strong has helped 250 workers in need — giving them each a $1,000 cash grant.
